The 2017 Meridian Woods Park Golf Outing and Awards Dinner was once again a huge success. This year’s event was held on Saturday, September 30th. The golf outing took place at Sarah Shank Golf Course and brought together eight teams of current residents, their family members and neighborhood alumni for a morning of fun, fellowship and competition. The weather was a bit cool to start but was nice by the midway point of the outing. All players were treated with a hat, sunglasses, can koozies and a sleeve of golf balls, courtesy of Partnering Sponsor, ERMCO, Inc.
The competition was very close, with a total of seven strokes separating the first and last place teams. The winning team claimed first with a score of -9. The team included Chris Healy, George Maude, Blair Smith and Gary Pierle. The team of Dave Moore, John Moore, Hank Nykaza and John Nykaza came in 2nd Place with a score of -6. 3rd Place went to the team of Terry Kennedy, Ken Parks, Brian Carnes and Vanessia Carnes with a score of -5.
Bringing up the rear with a score of -2 was the team of Dan Funk, Robert Funk, Lyle Headington and Tom Headington. It was noted that, while they were repeat “winners” of last place, they did make tremendous personal improvement in their score from the previous year. As Team representatives, Dan and Lyle accepted several “special” gifts at the awards banquet on behalf of their fellow team members.
In addition to cash and prizes for the winning teams, skills awards were given out for Longest Drives, Closest-To-The-Pin’s, and Longest Putt. Winners included George Maude, Don Lathrop, Gary Pierle, Mike Moore, Dan Funk and Vanessia Carnes.
The dinner that evening was held at the home of Darrell and Thecla Gossett on St. James Drive. The dinner was attended by the golfers, their guests and other neighbors and neighborhood alumni. Some 50 guests enjoyed an Italian feast which was provided by La Trattoria Restaurant and its owners, Tom and Renae Trotter. After dining poolside, meeting new neighbors and renewing old friendships, the group gathered on the deck and the golf awards were presented.
In addition to the golf awards, a key component of the evening was the door prize drawing in which several local sponsors played a key role (see attached list). It is due to the generosity of our sponsors that we are able to enjoy such a successful event. Everyone in attendance left with a nice door prize. We encourage all MWP residents to support these establishments and let them know you appreciate their support of our neighborhood.
This outing has been held continuously for well over 30+ years and continues to promote friendship and community spirit. If you have participated in the past and weren’t able to join us this year, we look forward to your return in 2018. We had some first time attendees this year and would hope to continue to add new neighbors to the event each year.
We thank the MWP Board for their financial support. Special thanks to Darrell Gossett, Chris Healy, Dave Moore, Rhonda Moore, Thecla Gossett and Dale Sears who served as the Golf Outing Committee this year. Watch the newsletter and website for information on next year’s event. Thank you for your continued support of Meridian Woods Park.
